Friday is the most peculiar day of the week.
People spend their Monday looking forward to it and celebrate the milestones along the way, each passing day a countdown until it arrives. Then, when Friday finally shows up, there is great celebration.
However, the allure of the day wears off when Saturday rolls around and the weekend seems to be rushing through. Everything is packed as much as possible into those two and a half days, making what’s supposed to be an enjoyable end to a busy week nothing more than a chore.
There’s an added pressure that one must enjoy it or live forever in shame for having wasted it:
“What did you do on Friday?”
“Nothing.”
*Guilty feeling for the rest of the week with determination to squeeze out some joy on the next one*
By putting all the emphasis on the weekend, it makes the rest of the week an even more dreaded grind.
Of course, the week is always a nice relaxing time for those with alternative lifestyles (retired or living as though they are) because it’s the opportune time to run errands without the weekend rush interfering… unless you live in a retirement community.
However, while Friday can be an exciting day, the week would better be served by spreading out its joy. Host a dinner on a Tuesday night, visit a friend for coffee on Thursday, alternate Wednesdays for a date night, etc.
Spending your life dreading most of the week is a recipe for dreading most of the days you’re alive.
We’re in a time when we can live for so much more, so let’s do it.
