This is a common axiom for engaging people, one to which I subscribed to for years. There’s still a kernel of truth to it, but it’s become a cliché leading many astray from its purpose.
Meeting others where they’re at is acknowledgment you are willing to be there with them. This isn’t always met with the greatest results.
Sometimes, people don’t want you to be there. Just look at the mass exodus of young people from Facebook once it became the norm for their parents. Or the retreat to the basement of a house, physically away from the rest of the family (even if they aren’t at home).
Once you get there, will they accept your challenge of growing? Or will they willfully ignore you as someone trying too hard or not willing to show a better example?
A transformation of this axiom can serve the same purpose, while simultaneously encouraging others to expand and grow:
Wherever you are, be there.
I will be here – encouraging, guiding and challenging you. After all, you know what it’s like to be in your world. But do you know what it’s like to be in another?
