You used to be considered trained in classic literature if you actually read it. It’s also a goldmine for many of our modern colloquialisms and provides a better understanding for the shape of Western civilization.
It’s also a lesson in patience and endurance as some parts are going to be tough to get through.
You don’t have to read it for religious purposes. Considering how foundational it’s been for generations, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to read it as a cultural artifact.
Does it actually take a year to read?
Not really.
Just pick up a guide online that breaks down what passages to read every day and pace yourself accordingly.
If anything, when a conversation about it ever comes up, you can at least have the confidence of participating because you actually read it.
