Giving a gift shouldn’t come with strings attached.
If I give you a gift for your birthday, there should be no obligation for you to provide one for mine… or even remember when it is. I’m not doing it for the reciprocity.
When someone pays a compliment, or puts in a good word, there should be no expectation it’s being done for an ulterior motive.
When someone gifts their time to help out, it shouldn’t be done with the expectation of having the favour called upon in return.
There are some who still hold to the idea of not expecting anything in return. Yet, we’ve been conditioned to think if we don’t pay back the gift, that person will hold it against us.
To change this attitude, it must start with the gift giver.
The giver should freely give without an expectation. Let that person be you.
