The Willpower to Continue

It takes a ton of willpower to sit at a keyboard without being distracted.

I am always amazed at those who can sit down and commit to sessions lasting hours at a time while focused on a single task. Paulo Coelho, in an interview with Tim Ferris, said he would procrastinate for a morning and then write for ten straight hours.

In those ten hours, little writing would get done on this end, but my house would be a lot cleaner.

We live in an age where willpower and focus have become a praiseworthy skill set. The entirety of human knowledge is given to us for personal interest or gain and we can access it for free (public libraries are a great place to do this).

Yet, we’re still not accomplishing anywhere near our potential.

We blame it on wasted productivity or the proliferation of constant communication, but the heart of it still comes down to our own willpower.

It takes a great deal of it to turn our actions into habit. Once that happens, our auto-pilot systems take care of the rest.

We just need the willpower to continue every day until it happens.
