Things That Are Real

I like playing cards.

The feel, the texture and sometimes the smell of them is enough to put me in a state of bliss. It seems kind of trivial (and by that, I mean stupid) to have such an infatuation with cards… but to a magician, the obsession is warranted.

It’s the tactile feel of each piece of paper as it slips through the fingers and presents itself to spectators. It’s their suspicion towards you when they select one, their anticipation when it’s lost among the pack and their sheer delight when it’s retrieved that makes it so powerful.

Yet, if I were to try doing the same process with a digital screen, you lose all of that emotion. It fails to be magic.

Real things provide real magic.

There’s something wonderful about holding them and it’s worth asking if we should let go.

Once it’s gone… the magic is gone with it.
