Touch Lightly

The mark of a beginning magician is the grip he or she uses. Their hands, specifically fingers, are super tense and if you pay attention, they’re tensing other parts of their body as well.

That’s why the first lesson is always to make your hands look as natural as possible. To do that, you need to hold items with the lightest possible grip whereupon even the slightest release will cause you to drop whatever you’re holding.

You also want to touch the objects as little as possible as to not insult the intelligence of your audience. Otherwise, it’s pretty obvious the magician is doing something when they shouldn’t.

A chef touches lightly with their ingredients, putting just enough in to allow the flavours to speak for themselves. We’ve all succumbed to a meal where the cook was heavy-handed with seasoning or spices.

When it comes to taking control of our lives, we can learn from this idea of touching lightly. If we grip too hard at things, or come at it heavy-handed, it gets exhausting.

Touch things light enough to have an impact and let it speak for itself.
