We Need a New Story

“Our challenge is to create a new language, even a new sense of what it is to be human. It is to transcend not only national limitations, but even our species isolation, to enter into the larger community of living species. This brings about a completely new sense of reality and value.”
The Dream of the Earth, Thomas Berry (1988)

It’s pretty obvious our world is facing some of its greatest challenges.

To think of it all at once… climate change, nuclear winter, super-antibodies, bio-weapons, meteor strikes, gene editing and uncontrollable super-intelligence (AI)… is overwhelming.

We either shut down or deny the worst case scenario.

Our response has not been to look towards the future, as we once did, but to regress to the past. We’re striving to find a golden era in which we can replicate again, ignoring the perils at our doorstep.

However, it’s important to know we’ve never been at a better time in human history.

More people day die from eating too much rather than eating too little.

Suicide claims more lives than violent crime, terrorism and war combined.

In today’s world, the person most likely to kill you… is you.

In the midst of all this, we are forgetting what is real in lieu of believing stories that we want to be real. We are taking our most powerful weapon – our consciousness – and using it against ourselves.

It’s time to create a new story for all of us to believe in. One that moves us into tomorrow in peace.
