You Learn More from Fiction

Take a look at the book reviews I’ve been posting and you’ll notice, this year, the overwhelming majority are non-fiction.

I enjoy a balance between the two, but there were many on my “to-read” list this year. It seemed like a smart way to learn about a variety of subjects.

Not quite.

With the exception of a few, the best authors are fiction writers.

It’s easier to immerse yourself in a book when you are being taken by the hand of a skilled master. You learn more about empathy by inhabiting the world of their characters and making observations you normally wouldn’t consider.

While I still learned from all the non-fiction books I read this year, they didn’t stick like the fiction worlds.

Fiction won’t give you as many “a-ha!” moments, but it’ll give you more introspective time considering what you just read.

It forces you to turn inward and become self-reflective.

There’s no shame in spending more time with works of fiction. You learn more than you think.
