Always On the Move

Human beings were never meant to be stationary.

We were always on the move and this was the key to the evolution of our bodies and brains. It was later when we developed stories that bonded us together that we began dominating every other species on the planet.

It shouldn’t come to a surprise to anyone that one of the secrets to keeping our mental health in peak shape is to get up and move. Even monks who sit in meditation for the majority of their day will spend the rest of it walking or doing chores.

When students would come visit me because they were feeling down, we wouldn’t just sit down in my office. Instead, I would take them down to the gym (or outside if the weather was nice) and we would play a game of something.

After we were done playing, then we would sit down and chat. They were always in a better mood and it made conversation easier.

Being on the move is also a time for your brain to work through difficult problems. It’s a time for breakthroughs and inspiration for ideas.

If you want to keep your mind in shape, keep moving.
